Detailed Description:

This Taiwan-made cheongsam, born in the 1960s, is a living specimen of East Asian garment culture exchange against the backdrop of the Cold War, as well as a rare masterpiece of cross-regional craftsmanship fusion from that era. At that time, as cheongsams gradually faded from view in Mainland China due to changing times, Hong Kong and Taiwan welcomed the final golden period of cheongsam development. This piece is a tour de force produced by Taiwanese artisans who fused overseas fabrics with traditional silhouettes: it incorporates imported Japanese velvet that was exclusively supplied for high-end custom tailoring back then. The rich, heavy velvet surface shimmers with subtle undertones of matte gold and deep crimson-purple, and all patterns on the fabric were hand-painted with gold by master artisans, where every single line carries slight variations of brushstrokes without a trace of the rigidity found in machine-printed textiles.

The pattern on the body draws inspiration from classic Kimono motifs of early Showa-era Japan. The spreading silhouettes of maple leaves are outlined with gold thread, weaving together with scattered chrysanthemum motifs and traditional geometric patterns to form well-orchestrated visual layers: dark brown serves as the base color, deep crimson-purple forms the subtle undertones, vermilion acts as the eye-catching highlight, and matte gold creates the flowing veins. The unique play of light and shadow on the velvet allows these motifs to shift between brightness and subtlety alongside the wearer's movements, capturing the archaic elegance described in Zhang Wu Zhi (Treatise on Superfluous Things): "Objects carry light, and light breathes life into patterns." In terms of structure, it retains the most classic double round placket design of Chinese cheongsams, with the collar and placket edges bound in pure red silk piping, creating a striking contrast against the dark tones of the body. Affixed to the placket is a hand-crafted pomegranate flower frog button, with vermilion silk thread coiled to form layered petals that subtly echo the Japanese-style chrysanthemum motifs on the body. Paired with a double-strand pearl necklace, it exudes both the dignity of traditional Chinese attire and a touch of Showa retro languor.

Hand-painted fabrics using imported Japanese velvet were produced in extremely low quantities even back then, supplied exclusively to a handful of high-end custom cheongsam workshops in Taiwan. Fewer than ten complete vintage cheongsams of this kind exist today, with most already suffering from velvet wear or peeling gold paint. This well-preserved piece, with its colors completely unfaded, possesses irreplaceable value whether as a physical specimen for costume history research or as a fine art piece for private collection.
