A moon like a hazy dream, a flower near yet far away. Gazing upon these two vintage Hong Kong Qipaos, my mind drifts back to the glamorous, yet complex, era of old Shanghai or Hong Kong. They are not merely garments; they are artifacts encapsulating the elegance of a bygone time.
One piece (referencing Qipao in images 1, 4, & 5), features a black base with white checks, punctuated by vibrant crimson plum blossoms. Its bold contrasting colors and geometric pattern bear a striking and high degree of similarity to the iconic black, white, and pink Qipao worn by the character Fleur (Ru Hua), portrayed by the beloved Anita Mui (Mei Gu) in my favorite film, Rouge (《胭脂扣》). Donning this, one can almost feel Fleur's poignant resolve and deep affection. This Qipao symbolizes the era's women breaking free to express their individuality—the lingering, unwavering tenderness beneath the "moon like a hazy dream."
The second piece (referencing Qipao in images 2 & 3) is based on a deep midnight blue, delicately painted with elegant white and pale pink tulip-like flora. It is less intense, carrying a more serene quietude. The pink piping along the collar and diagonal closure is like a beauty mark on a lady's heart—subtle yet distinguished. This reserved elegance and faint fragrance perfectly embody the spirit of "a flower near yet far away," seemingly whispering a secret, timeless tale.
Sharing these two vintage Hong Kong Qipaos that bear a striking resemblance to the costumes in my favorite Anita Mui film, Rouge, I hope to resurrect this nostalgia and beauty. Every silk thread, every frog button, holds a story that transcends time. They are an aesthetic of the old guard, an eternal classic, worthy of being cherished and savored.
